How The Health Barn came about….
Ceris Owen, Doctor of Chiropractic and Christine Jackson, BA. BSc. Clinical Reflexologist, previously had separate practices but a shared dream. In 2018, they combined their practices to develop The Health Barn in Askham.
Chiropractor Ceris practised as Eden Bodyworks for over six years. Initially, offering her range of bodywork massage techniques and acupuncture as a mobile therapist before qualifying as a chiropractor. Ceris’ business grew quickly, and she needed a base to work from in addition to visiting customers in their own homes. Ceris then joined the centre for Remedial Massage and Chiropractic in Penrith.
Christine completed her degree in Complementary Health, specialising in Clinical Reflexology. In 2012, she moved into business premises, in Plumpton, creating Calico Health & Well Being Centre. Here she combined her reflexology therapies with Flotation Therapy.
Christine and Ceris realised, through referring clients to each other, that combining Clinical Reflexology, Massage and Chiropractic treatments proved to be very effective, and this provided increased benefits to their clients.
In May 2018, with the enthusiastic support of Charles Lowther (the proprietor of Askham Hall), Ceris and Christine took on the challenge of converting his beautiful 18th century barn into The Health Barn. The barn is situated in a perfect location in Askham, at the centre of one of the Lake District’s most picturesque villages.
Christine and Ceris had a very clear vision of what they wanted to create. They have designed The Health Barn with the intention of becoming a health hub in Cumbria, supporting clients in the county as well as those further afield. It was quite a challenge to create something that preserved the distinctive historical character of the building whilst providing one of Cumbria’s only built for purpose centres. Today, The Health Barn has achieved its original aims of enhancing the building and creating a calm relaxing interior with ease of access incorporated into every aspect of the design.
The wide range of therapies and treatments are matched by the highest standards of professionalism. Besides the listed therapies and treatments, they also offer their clients, via consultation, bespoke treatments to suit their individual needs.
Their next aim is to further develop the building in order for The Health Barn to offer workshops, courses, classes and learning sessions.
